An Evening of Contemporary Music with Rebecca Joanne

Prepare to be transported by an evening of bold, thought-provoking, and beautifully immersive music, as we welcome Rebecca Joanne to Sicily Restaurant for a truly unique live performance.

About Rebecca Joanne

Rebecca Joanne is a UK-based singer, songwriter, and choir director with a versatile musical background. She began her career as a classically trained singer and later expanded into jazz, pop, and other contemporary genres, becoming a multi-skilled vocalist and instructor. This diverse foundation has made her an adaptable performer – she not only sings and plays piano, but also teaches voice and leads choral workshops. Rebecca has been involved in organizing vocal workshops and directing community choirs, reflecting her strong roots as a choir leader and vocal coach.

Role in Pretty Desperate

In addition to her solo and jazz endeavors, Rebecca Joanne is best known as a founding member of the duo Pretty Desperate. She co-created Pretty Desperate with guitarist/vocalist Flo Glen, whom she met through their work as choir leaders. The two quickly formed a musical bond that led them to write original songs and craft a distinctive set of cover arrangements. In the band, Rebecca contributes lead vocals and piano, complementing Flo’s guitar and vocals. Pretty Desperate is described as a “soulful guitar and piano vocal duo” celebrated for their rich harmonies and unique interpretations of both modern and classic tracks. Their repertoire blends pop, soul, and jazz influences, always delivered with a fresh, personal twist. The duo even characterizes their style as “queer pop for pretty desperate times,” emphasizing relatable songwriting and heartfelt performances in their branding and social media presence.

Notable Performances & Recordings: Since forming the band, Rebecca and Flo have performed together at intimate venues around London – for example, Pretty Desperate headlined an evening of live pop/soul/jazz at Sicily Restaurant in Belgravia in June 2025.  The duo has also appeared at local music events (including festival showcases) where their close vocal harmonies and stripped-back arrangements resonate with audiences. In 2025 they released their debut single, titled “Pretty Desperate,” as an independent digital release. This first single (an original song sharing the band’s name) was made available for download via their BuyMeACoffee page, allowing fans to support the production of future tracks. The group has hinted at more original music to come, having already performed unreleased songs like “Cold Water” live in anticipation of a follow-up release.

Other Musical Projects and Achievements

Outside of Pretty Desperate, Rebecca Joanne remains active in various musical projects. She is the lead vocalist of a Yorkshire-based jazz ensemble called Might As Well Be Swing (MAWBS), and she performs as one half of “Jazz by Jeff and Becky,” a piano/vocal jazz duo that appears at events and upscale venues. Rebecca is also a longstanding member of the Rock Choir organization – she has served as a Rock Choir leader, directing multiple adult choirs (at one point, five groups in West Yorkshire) and helping singers of all abilities to perform together. Through Rock Choir, she has participated in high-profile events: notably, in 2018 Rebecca sang as a backing vocalist with the Rock Choir Vocal Group at BBC Proms in the Park (Hyde Park, London), performing alongside artists like Josh Groban, Albert Hammond, and Michael Ball. This experience included rehearsals at the famed Abbey Road and Maida Vale studios and was a highlight of her early career. She has also contributed session vocals for recordings and live shows in other capacities. These accomplishments underscore Rebecca’s broad range – from fronting her own jazz and pop projects to supporting major acts as part of large ensemble performances.
